This 1992 Ghibli Release of "Porco Rosso" is one
of Hayao Miyazaki's greatest works. Sadly, Porco Rosso is not given the
attention and credit this film deserves. Porco Rosso follows the adventures of
an early-1900s Italian fighter-pilot who was born with a pig’s head and makes a
living as a bounty hunter. While the film is one of Miyazaki’s strangest, it
does reflect Miyazaki’s interest in planes, which has carried through into his
last feature film, The Wind Rises.
When ''Porco'' -- whose face has been transformed into that
of a pig by a mysterious spell -- infuriates a band of sky pirates with his
aerial heroics, the pirates hire Curtis, a rival pilot, to ''get rid'' of him.
On the ground, the two pilots compete for the affections of the beautiful Gina.
But it is in the air where the true battles are waged. Will our hero be
victorious?
Porco Rosso Reviews:
- Combining exquisite animation, (slyly subverted) Boys' Own action, and (barely concealed) adult themes, Porco Rosso goes the whole hog, offering anti-war escapades that will appeal to all ages. - Anton Bitel from Eye for Film
- It's a film Miyazaki made for himself, to indulge his passion for seaplanes, and this personal enthusiasm comes through clearly. - Jeffrey M. Anderson from Combustible Celluloid
- This story weaves together beautifully and leads to an ending that is a topic of discussion among those who have seen it. This is a must-see film. I give it an easy 10.- dballred from IMDB
- Believe it or not, my latest favorite movie hero just happens to be a flying pig. I'm not kidding. - Betty Jo Tucker from ReelTalk Movie Reviews
- It resembles in its best moments a fanciful version of Casablanca with a porcine Bogey in the lead. - Jeremy Heilman from MovieMartyr.com
Porco Rosso is not just one of those movies that you watch
and give back to Netflix. It is one of those movies that genuinely makes you
hate your life, but in a good way. Porco Rosso is one of those movies that have
the perfect mix of reality and fantasy. It gives you a world that you wish you
were a part of, and could be, if only you can find it.
Although few people actually know about this film, it must
be stated that this one of the best animated films of all time. It is also
quite unique, and has comedy and themes more enjoyable for an adult audience,
though youngsters should also get a kick out of it.
The Porco Rosso DVD edition was released in February, 2005. The
English voice actors were incredible. Michael Keaton voices the pig himself,
and sounded convincingly world-weary and cynical - Keaton putting on a deeper
register for the character.
