Backup Ponyo - a Work of Great Fantasy Will Delight Children Ages 3 to 100

Ponyo

The loose retelling of The Little Mermaid tells the story of a boy who befriends a daughter of the sea named Ponyo. The daughter of the king of the ocean, Ponyo is no ordinary goldfish - she has all the magic of the sea at her disposal. Ponyo desperately wants to be human and live with her friend’s family, but her father, the King of the Sea, has different ideas, at least when he’s paying attention to his wayward daughter and not mixing elixirs to clean up the mess man has made of the ocean. But when five-year-old Sosuke finds her near his seaside home, a special connection sparks between the two children, and Ponyo becomes determined to become human.

Ponyo is a 2008 Japanese anime which was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. This film is also a major departure from the studio's established style. And it was obviously aimed at young children. Even though there is nothing put in to attract adults, I still found myself drawn to the screen and fully immersed in the story. The movie's secret is brutal honesty with regard to the plot and the characters. The story and the characters are very upfront with their feelings/intentions etc.

Ponyo Reviews
  • The fantasy elements are so seamlessly blended with real elements. There is very little disbelief by the characters, and you want to believe yourself by the end. - Kevin Carr from 7M Pictures
  • It is a work of great fantasy and charm that will delight children ages 3 to 100. - Deborah Young from The Hollywood Reporter
  • Apart from the ecofriendly message, we have, as always, Miyazaki's magnificently inventive animation, which is almost enough to carry the day. - Ben Kenigsberg from Time Out Chicago
  • Best of all, Ponyo never ceases to be a genuine odyssey in short pants. - Michael Sragow from Baltimore Sun
  • Though far from Studio Ghibli's best film, Ponyo is still a magical experience. - Sam Bathe from Sam Bathe on April 15, 2010
  • There is a word to describe “Ponyo,” and that word is magical. This poetic, visually breathtaking work by the greatest of all animators has such deep charm that adults and children will both be touched. It’s wonderful and never even seems to try: It unfolds fantastically. - Roger Ebert

Ponyo Blu-ray

In the March of 2010, the Blu-ray version of Ponyo was released by Disney. What Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli have accomplished through magnificent artistry and beautiful hand-drawn animation, Disney accomplishes through technical perfection, a flawless presentation, and a masterfully encoded 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 transfer. Suffice to say, the Blu-ray edition of Ponyo is absolutely stunning.
