Backup Porco Rosso - One of the Best Animated Films of ALL Time

Porco Rosso

This 1992 Ghibli Release of "Porco Rosso" is one of Hayao Miyazaki's greatest works. Sadly, Porco Rosso is not given the attention and credit this film deserves. Porco Rosso follows the adventures of an early-1900s Italian fighter-pilot who was born with a pig’s head and makes a living as a bounty hunter. While the film is one of Miyazaki’s strangest, it does reflect Miyazaki’s interest in planes, which has carried through into his last feature film, The Wind Rises.

When ''Porco'' -- whose face has been transformed into that of a pig by a mysterious spell -- infuriates a band of sky pirates with his aerial heroics, the pirates hire Curtis, a rival pilot, to ''get rid'' of him. On the ground, the two pilots compete for the affections of the beautiful Gina. But it is in the air where the true battles are waged. Will our hero be victorious?

Ponyo

The loose retelling of The Little Mermaid tells the story of a boy who befriends a daughter of the sea named Ponyo. The daughter of the king of the ocean, Ponyo is no ordinary goldfish - she has all the magic of the sea at her disposal. Ponyo desperately wants to be human and live with her friend’s family, but her father, the King of the Sea, has different ideas, at least when he’s paying attention to his wayward daughter and not mixing elixirs to clean up the mess man has made of the ocean. But when five-year-old Sosuke finds her near his seaside home, a special connection sparks between the two children, and Ponyo becomes determined to become human.

Backup Howl's Moving Castle - An Amazing Animated Adventure

Howl's Moving Castle

Based on the novel by Diana Wynn Jones, the Howl's Moving Castle follows the adventures of a young girl, Sophie, a diligent teenage girl working in her family's hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome-but-mysterious wizard named Howl. This innocent encounter engages the vain and conniving Witch of the Waste, who transforms into a 90-year-old woman. Sophie's efforts to break the curse bring her to Howl's magical moving castle, where she befriends Markl, Howl's apprentice, and the hot-headed fire demon Calcifer. Her love and support have a major impact on Howl, who can be maddeningly self-indulgent and singularly noble: He defies royal orders to participate in a meaningless war and risks his life to bring peace to the kingdom. The film was received a lot of positive reviews and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Backup Kiki's Delivery Service - A Beautiful and Introspective Masterpiece

Kiki

Kiki's Delivery Service, a 1989 Japanese anime movie, is one of Miyazaki’s most accessible films. The heartwarming, gorgeously-rendered tale follows a young witch named Kiki who leaves her family to make her way in the big city. When an apprentice witch turns thirteen, she must leave her home in order to hone her craft. Although Kiki's sole talent is broom-flying, she sets out for adventure with her cat Jiji. They settle in a charming seaside town, where Kiki establishes her own delivery service. As Kiki learns to balance independence with responsibility, her kind heart wins her many new friends in this coming-of-age tale.

It’s a beautiful and introspective masterpiece. On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, Kiki’s Delivery Service scored a perfect 100% rating based on 22 reviews. The initial DVD version of Kiki’sDelivery Service was released in 2003. 7 years later in 2010, a new DVD version released with some more features.

Backup Hayao Miyazaki Princess Mononoke - Japanese Jewel

Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke is a Japanese anime which was first released in Japan on July 12, 1997. It has been perhaps one of the most talked-about animes for the last ten years. Created by anime legend Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service), and his flagship studio, Ghibli, this already-classic film uses the fairly common Ghibli theme (Man Vs. Nature) and depicts it like never before.

Backup My Neighbor Totoro - One of the Greatest Animated Films

My Neighbor Totoro

A few months ago, the Blu-ray version of My Neighbor Totoro was finally released by Disney. This is another family favorite. The story follows two sisters (Satsuki and her younger sister Mei) who find themselves sharing a forest with Totoro, a giant rabbity creature who is the local forest god. Totoro leads them on a series of Alice in Wonderland-like adventures. Throw in a Cat Bus (a bus that is a cat), soot sprites and and a tear-jerking tale of two young girls with an ailing mother and you’ll begin to understand some of the wide appeal of the film.

Backup Spirited Away - Magnificent and Spellbinding Movie

Spirited Away

Spirited Away is Miyazaki's most successful film. It stayed in Japanese theaters for more than ten months when it was released there in July 2001 and made over $234 million, becoming the highest-grossing movie in the country's box office history. Following this tremendous success in its native country, Spirited Away was translated into English with Lasseter's guidance and dubbed by a virtual who's-who of previous Disney voiceover stars. It was met with nearly universal critical and public acclaim and won the 2002 Best Animated Feature Academy Award. It won numerous awards all over the world.

Backup Castle in the Sky Laputa - One of Miyazaki Best Films

Movie Castle in the Sky

Castle in the Sky — or Laputa as it is known in Japan — is annual airing in Japan resulted in the most Tweeted moment of all time, revealing how popular the film remains. An orphan named Sheeta eludes the clutches of a secret agent named Muska while trying to discern her family's history. After her first escape from Muska, Sheeta meets up with a young boy named Pazu, whose father, a photographer, was disgraced after he took a picture of the legendary flying island of Laputa and had it dismissed as a hoax. When the two realize that a family heirloom Sheeta carries allows them to levitate, the two begin a search for the lost island, trailed by Muska, who is also searching for Laputa.

Backup Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Blu-ray/DVD

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, first released in 1984 in Japan, is one of the best Miyazaki Hayao movies. A thousand years after a global war, a seaside kingdom known as the Valley of the Wind remains one of only a few areas still populated. Princess Nausicaa is the young defender of a dying post-apocalyptic world. Nausicaa is tasked with protecting her village from both giant insects and the destructive forces of the remaining traces of humanity. By today's standards, Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind is undeniably creaky. But it's also my favorite animated film. Why?
